When looking at the Cartier Montre Rotonde Double Mystery Tourbillon, you cannot help but wonder what is the trick that makes the hands move. Where are the time and mechanism concealed? The watchmakers have hidden them beyond their creative mastery and their incredible technical skills.

The miracle of Cartier watchmaking began in 1912 with the creation of the first mystery timepiece. Two collections followed, transforming time into fantasy and watches into jewelery. It was a challenge to create such technical complexity, but nothing was impossible for Cartier, the subtle magician and creator of an enigmatic time.

The Magical Cartier Montre Rotonde Double Mystery Tourbillon is a watch with a tourbillon that seems suspended in space. Its new movement, the 9454 MC Double Mystery Tourbillon was a challenge for the watchmaker. The tourbillon turns on the axis every 60 seconds and appears to be floating without any connection to the rest of the watch. The cage then starts to perform a second rotation every five minutes at a rate of one turn, thus completing the illusion.

The unbelievable complex, yet elegant Cartier Montre Rotonde Double Mystery Tourbillon gets its name from the completely unique mechanical construction Double Mystery. Cartier watchmakers showed great ingenuity for the movement and matter in order to create this incredible kinetic sequence. The design was inspired by Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin’s tricks so this illusion of levitation can convince its audience of the existence of the supernatural. A classic tourbillon uses the rotation of the cage to balance the gravitational attraction. However, this magical device seems to defy these laws.

The watch was equipped with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal disk with an aperture the size of the tourbillon in order to create the illusion of levitation. The disc was set to support the cage in rotation and the minute wheel was positioned on the axis designer to reduce the resistance torque. Its force is transmitted to the tourbillion and caused the entire device to revolve every 5 minutes in space. As a result, the tourbillion makes a full turn of the open space in 5 minutes and at the same time the cage makes 5 revolutions. The trick is to place a rack around the edge of the crystal disk so that it transforms into a large gear wheel and performs one revolution every five minutes.
